Definition

An asset-backed token is a broad market term for a digital token whose value, payment rights or redemption arrangement is linked to one or more identified assets under the issuer's legal structure.

What backed can mean

The token may represent a direct claim on an asset, a claim against an issuing entity, an interest in a pool or a value-stabilization arrangement. The blockchain record alone does not establish which rights the holder receives.

Governing documents should explain the underlying assets, custody, segregation, valuation, issuance, redemption and treatment if an issuer or service provider fails.

Backing must be evaluated legally and operationally

Reserve reports or attestations can provide information about underlying assets, but they do not by themselves establish ownership or redemption rights. Those rights depend on the contracts and legal structure connecting the token, issuer, holder and backing assets.

The token's liquidity can also differ from the liquidity of the underlying assets, particularly when redemption is restricted or delayed.

What it does not mean

Asset-backed token is a broad category. A tokenized traditional asset seeks to represent a traditional asset or claim, while an asset-referenced token is designed to maintain value against specified reference assets. These categories can overlap.

Questions about asset-backed token

Does holding the token mean owning the underlying asset?
Not necessarily. The holder may have a claim against an issuer or pool rather than direct ownership of a specific asset.
Is every asset-backed token a stablecoin?
No. Equities, bonds, fund interests, commodities and other assets can also support or be represented by tokens.
What should a holder verify?
Review the issuer, governing documents, reserve assets, custodian, segregation, valuation method and redemption terms.
