What is Starknet?

Starknet is a permissionless Layer 2 network that uses STARK zero-knowledge proofs to achieve scalability while maintaining Ethereum's security. Unlike zkEVM solutions that aim for EVM compatibility, Starknet uses its own Cairo programming language, enabling more efficient zero-knowledge computations. Developed by StarkWare, the team behind StarkEx (powering dYdX v3 and Immutable X), Starknet represents years of ZK research applied to general-purpose computation.

The STRK token was launched in 2024, providing governance, staking, and fee payment functionality. Starknet's unique approach trades EVM compatibility for potentially superior long-term scalability and the ability to prove more complex computations efficiently.
